There is a misconception that an API supplied in a glass jar is somehow inherently higher quality than the same material supplied in professionally sealed pharmaceutical packaging.

That is simply not how API quality is determined.

Quality is established through the identity, purity, specification, manufacture, testing, storage and appropriate protection of the material — not by whether the final outer container happens to be made from glass.

How Astral APIs are protected

Where appropriate, Astral APIs are supplied in double-sealed vacuum bags inside a protective foil pouch.

The sealed product is then placed inside a labelled pharmaceutical-grade CurTec container, providing a robust outer container for transport, storage and handling.

This provides multiple layers of protection:

API → sealed inner packaging → second sealed barrier → foil pouch → rigid pharmaceutical-grade outer container.

The API remains protected in its sealed primary packaging until the customer is ready to use it.

Once received, the customer can either retain the material in its original sealed packaging or, where appropriate under their own procedures, transfer it into the supplied CurTec container or another suitable storage container.

Glass has advantages — but it isn't automatically better

Glass can be an excellent pharmaceutical packaging material and Astral uses glass where it is appropriate.

However, glass also has practical disadvantages.

A glass container can be dropped and broken in a laboratory or dispensary. Apart from the loss of valuable API, broken glass creates a safety and contamination hazard and requires appropriate clean-up procedures.

Glass is also heavier to transport and does not, simply by being glass, establish that the API has been better protected or is of higher quality.

Conversely, modern pharmaceutical packaging systems can provide multiple protective barriers while remaining lightweight, robust and resistant to breakage.

What actually matters?

When evaluating an API, pharmacists should look beyond the appearance of the container and consider the things that actually determine product quality:

What specification does it comply with?
Has its identity and purity been appropriately tested?
Is a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis available?
Is the packaging compatible with the material?
Does the packaging provide the required protection from moisture, light and environmental exposure?
Has the material been stored and transported appropriately?
Is there full batch traceability?

Those questions tell you considerably more about the quality of an API than whether it arrives in a glass jar.

Packaging should protect the product — not sell the product
